When You Are Dating Someone Who Is Depressed

Depression is something that can be difficult to understand if you have never experienced it yourself. In fact, even if you have experienced depression in the past you may not be able to understand how your loved one is feeling because each person and their depression is different. Depression has been known to make or break a lot of relationships, and it can be difficult when you just don’t know what to expect from day to day.

The best thing you can do when your loved one is depressed is to get them to talk. Many times we become depressed because we feel as though we cannot express ourselves and we don’t have anyone to share things with. Encourage your love interest to talk to you and let them know that you are open to anything that they have to say.

Get them out of their rut. Many times depressed people will simply want to stay in bed or they will just want to live on the couch. Make them get out of the house and do something fun or just take a walk a few times a week. Many times it is as simple as putting a wrench in the depressive cycle that will help snap them out of it. They may feel a little bit annoyed at your wanting them to get up and going, but in the long run they will likely thank you, as well.

Let them know that you will not make excuses for them or their depression. While you don’t want the person to feel badly, you also do not want to enable the depressive behavior. When they give you an excuse for something, tell them that you think that their being depressed is probably more of a reality as to why they are behaving the way that they are. Many times when you call someone out like this they see their behavior for what it is.

Get them help if they need it. Many times depression takes care of itself. We all get depressed from time to time and usually it is something that lasts a couple days or weeks and then we move on. If the depressive funk does not seem to be lifting, let your loved one know that you are worried and tell them that they need help and you want to help them get it. If they are suicidal or talking about dying, you may want to call the authorities and have them intervene on behalf of the person that you love.

Depression can be very scary and it can also be very difficult to date someone who is behaving this way. You may go from being frustrated to being sad to being angry and this is normal. Try to cut your loved one a bit of slack while they are getting through their feelings, chances are soon enough they will be back to their old selves with just a bit of support from you.
