Photography Tips For Bridal Sessions

The bridal session is such a beautiful time during the wedding process, because the bridal session is where you can truly bond with the bride. Yes, you have had the meetings and the phone calls but it’s the bridal shoot is where you get to know your subject, her personality, her flattering angles and her style. How great is that?! If the bridal shoot is handled correctly you will be able to go into the wedding day fully comfortable with the bride and with her feeling like a supermodel, which will only make for better more natural photographs. Here are a few tips to get great bridal shots and make sure your bride feels like the beauty she is.

Most brides arrive at their bridal session a bit flustered, excited and unsure all at the same time. If this is the bride’s first run through on the makeup and hair (which hopefully is not the case) then she will most likely be a lot more stressed out. Like many of us, she is probably a bit nervous about being in front of a camera. So, first things first, put the bride at ease. As a photographer you will want to focus on making sure the bride feels comfortable because if she doesn’t, it will definitely show.

Begin shooting with plenty of casual conversation (humorous if you can, because who doesn’t like a funny photographer?) mixed with simple poses. I have found it best to have a starter spot at the location, and get warmed up. Let her get comfortable in front of the camera, and you will find your stride in the meantime. As the shooting continues the bride will gradually find her confidence, and will start looking better and better. Make sure you are constantly complimenting to build her up, and help continuously posing. People who are not professionally photographed all the time want and need direction. Well, unless of course they have been studying fashion and bridal magazines, but even then you are their guide. Also it almost goes without saying, but keep a constant eye on light and angles!

As you notice the bride getting into her groove you should start moving toward your favorite spots, the ones that you know will make great framed bridal prints. Shoot away! Our brides almost always go from shy to future fashion model in an hours’ time, so don’t get too flustered if your first shots out of the gate aren’t Vogue covers.

Make sure that you have scouted your location before the shooting begins and have figured out multiple options to give the bride, and can give your favorite recommendations. As we have said, be sure to save your best spots for later in the shoot to ensure that your bride is at her best. This is a formula that we have used time and again for success, as these sessions can be very challenging if not handled right. Weddings are beautiful events, but carry a lot of stress along with them, and it is your job as photographer to make sure that your bride is incredibly at ease. I cannot stress that enough. Now go out there and make some stunning imagery!
